Earlier this month, Kuno, a member of the Forest Heights Police Department who partnered with Sgt. Grooms for years, died in the line of duty assisting the Prince George's County Police Department during a call for service.

Kuno was the original, longest-standing K9 in the department. The cause of death was determined to be heatstroke while searching a school building for a burglary suspect.

Shortly after the search began, Kuno began showing signs of heatstroke, and Grooms returned him to their vehicle and gave him water, but the dog then collapsed and had to be rushed to a local vet, where he later died.

Support has swelled for the beloved pup following his death, with well-wishers within the community who offered prayers and praise for the dog, who was 5 years old at the time of its death and served four years with the agency.

Kuno was further honored during the Running 4 Heroes event, where a mile was dedicated to the fallen officer in New Jersey.

There will be a "Line of Duty Death" memorial held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 13 at the Forest Heights Neighborhood Park in the 5800 block of Terrell Avenue in Forest Heights.

Following that, at 12:15 p.m., there will be a K9 lineup and processional on Maryland 210 - Indian Head Highway between Livingston Road and Bald Eagle Drive.

For those unable to attend, the services will be streamed on the Town of Forest Heights YouTube page and the Kendal Wade Funeral Home website.
